YEEZUS

Image
My favourite Kanye album. I’ll get into that later. Happy 10 year anniversary YEEZUS.   YEEZUS isn't an album that can be described with any simple introduction, an album that created its own category in current rap, it's an ultramodern classic. Including an emulsion of disordered electro, simultaneously regurgitating new lines of his own political constructs, YEEZUS is an insight to the workings of insanity, a project that hints at the beginning of YE’s mental undoing. If only we knew where he would be now. Seemingly contained within 10 songs, every song has a carefully designated role in creating history with this project.  Kanye makes a profound entrance with his intro choice, quickly aligning himself with his emotional motivations for this project. ‘On Sight’ is an audacious intro, instantly sinking listeners into the black hole that's created with this album, Kanye single handedly being able to create an experimental variation of his own coherent production.Yeezus ...

MOTOMAMI: Futuristic Flamenco

Image
A year after its release, I've decided to dissect what may be one of the best pop albums from a recent artist in the past decade. MOTOMAMI is an unforgettable third release from Spanish artist Rosalia, an album that is layered with texture and finesse, its flamenco brought into a new sonic timeline, speeding past traditional familiarities. This album pushes RosaliĂ  to a new status in her artistry, an embodiment of her consistent dedication to nurturing her sound, allowing herself to adapt her musical ability to fit into the moulds of any genre she wishes. Rosalia releases her protruding sadness heard in “El Mal Querer”, letting her vocal capability be showcased through contrasting production; creating a necessary nonchalance for her sound. She allows herself to create an album that curates an aura that compliments what it means to be a MOTOMAMI. MOTOMAMI embodies its role without fault, making just under an hour Rosalia contains the experience within a shorter time frame making s...

RENAISSANCE

Image
A love letter to the queer community: ACTI RENAISSANCE  After the release of her 6th studio album ‘Lemonade’ as her most personal project, many were left wondering how she would continue to set another standard with her next album. An artist that's completely mastered the art of dedication to their craft; allowing herself to pour her whole soul into her work and create untouchable projects time and time again. It does not come as a surprise that she's managed to surpass her own greatness and create an album as flawless and fun as RENAISSANCE, this is BeyoncĂ©s take on maximalism, a transparent work of freedom and a reintroduction to Sasha Fierce with extra vigour.   RENAISSANCE is refreshing and insightful, a well crafted dedication to the likes of disco, house, soul and dancehall. BeyoncĂ© created this project as a form of escapism for people to look at the joys in life, to dance, to be free. A love letter to the queer community and her late relative (Uncle Jonny) this album...

Steve Lacy: Gemini Rights

Image
The realities of a flawed romance : Insight into the summer soundtrack of 2022 ‘Gemini Rights’. A sophomore album that changed Steve’s trajectory as an artist in the industry, ‘Gemini rights’ created waves in the scene for a new generation of original bedroom pop artists as Lacy managed to entice the younger generation of alt pop fans with a funky new take on a traditional break up album.  Steve Lacy, a 24 year old artist from Compton isn’t an unheard of musician in the industry; making waves in the scene as a producer since he was a teenager creating beats on his Iphone on Garageband. The Grammy winning artist had formerly been curating the well known melodies of many hits and even boosting upcoming artists in generating their own sounds, Lacy is an embraced talent who had been consistently enhancing the tracks of many albums including his own works in his popular alternative band ‘The Internet’. After the release of his solo debut ‘Apollo XXI’ the artist had firmly established his...

Passion, Pain and Demon Slayin

Image
Abandoning his frequented cadence of melodic grief; Cudi brings forth a different embodiment of his pain through a selection of eclectic songs that personifies the feeling of ecstasy. Both figuratively and literally.  After introducing us to his most experimental self in ‘Speedin bullet to heaven’ , Cudi doesn't fail to continuously surprise his listeners with the versatility of his sound. Layered in an ambient flow of melodic lessons, “Passion, Pain and Demon Salyin'' shows Cudi doesn't always have to be serious to produce a well grounded piece of work. An album that consists of a string of psychedelic schooling, it's clear that Cudis expanded to a different level of consciousness, and he's having fun with it too.  Opening with the upbeat ‘Frequency’ listeners are immediately put in a trance; obviously intentional as Cudi makes sure you know you're about to start your trip. A song that sets the tone for the whole album ‘Frequency’ is not far from classic...

Kelela: the importance of self assurance

Image
An artist that creates sounds that can not be confined by any genre or boxed into any category of music, Kelela has proven continuously that she's thriving in her career and graciously producing consistent classics by doing what she does best. Being her most authentic self.  Proceeding the release of her latest album Raven, I was highly inclined to write this as Kelela is definitely up there as one of my favourite artists and obviously I wanted to explain why. A late bloomer in the music industry, Kelela only began taking her music career seriously after her late 20s. An established academic about to graduate in an American University Kelela was headed towards the traditional path of a student but fortunately decided to disregard her education and focus on music, Kelela decided to listen to her heart. In 2013 dropping her highly acclaimed debut mixtape, “Cut 4 Me”  it was clear from the beginning that she was a force of nature and an artist to watch. Her first album was extrem...

S.O.S

An article on the highly anticipated sophomore studio album from fan favourite SZA. Succeeding the extensive fanbase collected after the release of the masterpiece studio album CTRL, it was clear that pressure was high for artist SZA during the wait between her next release. It wont come as a shock that this album does exactly what needed to be done with another cult classic on her hands. SOS is the mature older sister to CTRL, another personal diary that allows us into SZA’s inner monologue. This album doesn't shy away from shamelessness or oversharing; an album that not only shows SZA’ growth mentally but also artistically. With 23 songs and a range of different genres SZA showcases her artistic elasticity as she rides the waves of internal healing, flowing through all the peaks of her emotions effortlessly.  Starting off with a new genre that's not yet been explored in her discography, the album is introduced with the blunt self-titled intro ‘SOS’. An impressive introduction...
